Alaska, just the name makes you think of wilderness and an untamed frontier. Travel to Petersburg to explore the wonders of Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage, Seymour Canal and various other fjords. We will live aboard the 85 foot motor yacht, M/V Northern Song for 8 days and 7 nights.
This adventure coincides with the annual herring spawn in the Seymour Canal. Pacific herring spawn in the sheltered bays and estuaries of southeast Alaska. This massive biomass of fish attracts many other species of wildlife, most notably humpback whales and bald eagles. We hope to have the opportunity to photograph humpback whales “bubble-netting,” a unique feeding technique that is exciting to photograph. Bald Eagles line the shore and tree tops waiting for their chance to grab a herring. Trying to capture flying eagles makes for a fun and challenging photographic experience. Along with the whales and eagles we will have the potential to see bears, both black and brown walking the shore. The herring also attract harbor seals, and Steller sea lions. Dalls porpoise love to ride the crest of the waves on the bow of the boat. Dalls porpoises are only found here in the northern Pacific ocean. There is also a chance that killer whales will be in the area. What a sight to see Orcas silently gliding through the water. We must not forget all the ducks and waterfowl and sea birds that also grace this Alaskan paradise.
Along with all the wildlife opportunities the scenery makes for a gorgeous backdrop. This is one of the most scenic places in the world. We travel up fjords with waterfalls falling thousands of feet from hanging glaciers. Tidewater glaciers are found up the many arms of the inside passage. These glaciers terminate abruptly at the ocean, large pieces of the glacier fracture and separate, or calve, from the ice front as icebergs. As we motor toward a glacier we will be winding our way through the icebergs that have calved off the face of the glacier. Another wonderful photographic opportunity is to capture the color and shapes of these ice creations. Next to Antarctica this is one of the great places to find icebergs.
We may also have the chance to go to shore for some hiking and or just cruising a bay in a zodiac. If weather and time cooperate we can arrange for an optional scenic flight over the ice fields in a floatplane.
Traveling on the Northern Song will allow us great flexibility. We will be able to go where the best photographic opportunities are. We will have daily discussions with the group and our captain to determine our plan for the day. We will make time for photo editing assistance and image reviews.
The Northern Song is a very spacious and comfortable yacht. There is plenty of room for everyone on deck and in the wheelhouse. Your cabins are cozy and comfortable with en suite toilets and showers. We will dine on fabulous meals created by the chef, focused on regional seafood. We may also drop our own shrimp pots for a taste of Alaska fishing. All dinners include fine wine and local Alaska beer.
This is truly an expedition not to be missed!
Sue Cedarholm and Juan Pons will be your guides and photo instructors. Having traveled in Alaska for the past 16 years as a professional photographer, co-leader and organizer of workshops Sue can’t wait to share her passion for this special place with you. Juan is an accomplished professional photographer, and photographic educator who had a deep love for the outdoors, he has been visiting this area of Alaska for over 6 years. Captain Dennis is the captain and owner of gorgeous yacht. He lives in Petersburg and has spent a lifetime in Alaska first as a commercial fisherman and now the owner of an expedition yacht.
